Trends for Construction Companies in 2019
In the past few years, the construction industry has seen a lot of changes. We’ve seen many of these changes firsthand since our origination in 1974. So many of these changes have revolutionized the construction industry—we’ve had to adapt quite a bit over the years. And at Western Constructors, we’re always dedicated to teaching you about our industry. We know that construction can be confusing, and we want to make sure that you know as much as possible about what’s happening in the construction industry right now. New changes in construction are exciting for us, and we think you might find them exciting too. Things change a little bit every year, and we think that it’s important to share the direction that our industry is taking. There are many exciting trends for construction companies in 2019, and we’re very excited to be able to share them with you.
Trends in Technology and Green Design
One of the ways the construction industry is changing is through technology. Every year, technology gets a little better. Smartphones improve, computers improve, and even the technology used in the construction industry improves. One trend in 2019 has been the use of drones in commercial construction. One of the reasons that you’ll find more drones around construction sites is because they’re becoming a lot less expensive. And in addition to becoming less expensive, drones are improving in quality, too. Drones are useful because they can monitor construction sites in a way people can’t do by themselves. With their cameras and ability to reach remote places, they give construction companies information about safety, project progress, and so much more important data. If you’re interested in learning more about new technologies like these, we talked a little bit more about them in an article you can find here.
Another one of the trends for construction companies in 2019 is the use of green design and construction technology. Environmentally friendly projects are becoming more common as the years go on. And construction companies are doing their best to be as efficient as possible in their process. Not only does improved efficiency help project owners save money, it reduces waste and helps the environment. And this effort doesn’t only extend to material types, construction, and demolition. It extends into the planning and design process itself. With better technology, construction companies can design buildings that last longer and use fewer resources. Custom metal buildings, for example, are energy-efficient because of their improved insulation. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of custom metal buildings, we recommend checking out our article here. Even though people will continue to need more buildings, better design and technology will lessen their environmental impact.
Modular Construction and Cost Trends in 2019
In addition to green design and technology, modular construction will continue to change the industry in 2019. Though it might sound confusing at first, it’s not as hard to understand as it sounds. What modular construction essentially means is that most of the project is completed off-site. This is often the case for custom metal buildings. Factories will build the pieces of a project at a different location than where they will eventually be installed. Then all they have to do is transport those pieces to the construction site and put them together. This new way of handling construction has grown a lot more popular recently, and it’ll only continue to grow in 2019. It also contributes to the green efforts of construction companies. Because so much of the project is completed away from the job site, it’s much easier to control waste and get projects done faster.
Unfortunately, not all changes can be good changes. One of the recent trends in construction has been a rise in the cost of materials, and that’s expected to continue in 2019. This trend began in 2017, and there was a 9% increase in material costs over the course of 2018. The change in cost has to do with tariffs and decreased supply. It’s no reason to despair, though. Most construction companies came out of it okay and were ready to handle the increased cost. Better technologies have made project efficiency a lot better, which has helped reduced the effect of the material cost increase. People will still need buildings, and construction companies will continue to build them. That’s not something that’s going to change anytime soon.
Safety Equipment for Construction Companies
So many great things are happening in construction right now, and we’re excited to be a part of it. Safety equipment, for example, has improved a lot recently, and it will get even better in 2019. Because it’s one of the most important goals of the industry, construction companies are constantly coming up with new ways to improve safety for their workers. Some construction companies even have boots with built-in Wi-Fi that notify construction managers when their wearer falls or gets tired. Some technologies like these, though, are still hard to come by because of their cost. But as the technology continues to improve, those costs will go down. And that means that you can expect to see more of these kinds of technologies used in construction projects in the near future.
At Western Constructors, we’re proud to be a part of such an exciting industry. Though it changes a little bit each year, we’re in it for the long haul.
