Long-Term Construction In Grand Junction, CO

Our family business as general contractors has always given us a unique perspective about building in Grand Junction, CO. Western Constructors is owned by Bruce Milyard and his son, Tyler Milyard. The two have a family history in construction that reaches over 30 years, when Bruce first began the company. Relationships are our strategy for long-term construction in Grand Junction, CO. In some of our earlier blog posts from last year, we talked about how we’ve now completed work all over the United States. But recently, we’ve reaffirmed our love for Grand Junction, and our dedication to the community. In this blog post we want to talk again about why we are the right choice for general contractors in Grand Junction.

Community And The Internet

It used to be that neighborhoods really meant something. People didn’t just buy homes because they liked the location, the school, the lawn, and the interior. They got to know the people who could become their neighbors. It was important for families with kids to know if there were other kids in the neighborhood, or if there were parks nearby so they could play. Before the days of the internet, community meant more. Some of the best moments of life were spent in community bbq’s or picnics. It wasn’t uncommon for kids to congregate en-masse to play games of football or tag.

The internet, of course, has brought its own forms of connection, and neither is necessarily better than the other. Some people develop rich relationships online with their friends, or colleagues. As general contractors, our professional world has expanded with the internet. Not just in terms of the people we network and do business with, but in our education. It’s much easier to keep abreast of the latest trends in technology, and innovation. We’ve created great relationships across the country that have brought jobs and income to families in Grand Junction, through the internet’s growth over the last twenty years.

Long-Term Construction In Grand Junction And Our Communities

What we want to share with you today is that we’ve taken a couple profound lessons from our past, and from society’s changes to being more online. First, we liked the days of rich community involvement. Maybe you miss days like that too. Our goal is to increase community involvement by creating live-work spaces. You can see our love for it in the projects we take on. We’ve blogged about these projects in the past in more detail, but our project at Los Colonias and near the Edgewater Brewery are perfect examples.

The business park at Los Colonias is one of our favorite projects we’re currently working on. This construction project will bring dozens of new businesses into Grand Junction’s riverside area, and we envision, will expand the downtown. The work at Edgewater, which is just a few hundred yards away, already has the River’s Edge Townhomes, which we’ve put in over the last few years. That area will soon have more retail space, restaurants, and be a perfect live-work community in Grand Junction. When we think of long-term construction in Grand Junction, CO, we think of the Los Colonias development. New businesses are moving to Grand Junction, like Rocky Mounts. Businesses like these are creating new jobs in Grand Junction, and make our job as general contractors very exciting.

Live-Work Construction In Grand Junction, CO

The reason we like the expansion to the Riverside part of town is because it will be a live-work community. A place where people can live, like in the River’s Edge Townhomes, and walk to work either downtown or in the Los Colonias business park. We believe that one of the answers to our fast-paced society today is for general contractors in Grand Junction to develop communities where people are encouraged to know each other. The internet is a big world. Our own small communities in Grand Junction have become virtually global. It’s put a stress on our society, where we no longer know our neighbors. We want to bring back that local feel to our ever-expanding social network with people we see every day in our homes and places of work.

The second profound lesson we’ve learned from our society’s vast changes is that even though people connect more online now than they maybe even do in person, it doesn’t change the fact that we all want real in-person connections in our lives. Even though there are plenty of companies doing long-term construction in Grand Junction, CO, and many of those companies can be found online, people want to work with people they feel they can trust. The best way to build trust is with genuine conversations, and really listening – which is what our family atmosphere at Western Constructors has always taught us to do. Our office doors are always open to anyone we’re working with, or to anyone interested in hiring a general contractor. We also do our best to connect with the community in other ways, such as helping students in Construction Management at CMU.

When working with us, people can expect to be treated like family. It’s just the approach we take. We want to be part of Grand Junction for the long-term. We realize that the buildings we construct will be here probably long after we are. It’s a legacy that we’re proud to be part of. Grand Junction is a unique community that wants to hold on to what it’s always been. We don’t want to lose that neighborhood aspect to who we are.

Long-Term Construction In Grand Junction Is Making The World Smaller Again

Long-term construction in Grand Junction, CO, for us, is all about building communities that last. It’s why we work with companies we trust like Electrician Grand Junction, and pursue projects we can be passionate about.

You’ll notice that a lot of our projects have a live-work element to them. The Knollwood apartments on Patterson and 1st Street and right across the road from McCalister’s Deli. Walgreens is also there, a satellite office for Enstrom’s, and several buildings of office space. It’s a place people can live, eat, and work, all without driving. It’s a smaller community within the larger Grand Junction area.

Our goal is to make the world of construction in Grand Junction a smaller community, in an ever-growing society. We think that by helping people connect in smaller groups of people we can do Grand Junction a great service. We can help people feel connected even though the internet is so big. Even though Grand Junction as a city is growing faster than it ever has before.

Our Guide to Construction Materials

At Western Constructors, we think that it’s important to give you as much information about the construction industry as possible. Often, we do so by teaching you things like the difference between general contractors and construction managers. But there’s some knowledge that people take for granted. We also think it’s important to cover the basics, especially when those basics can be incredibly important for first time home builders or project owners. That’s why this week we wanted to take a step back and talk a little bit about something that’s important in every aspect of the construction industry: building materials. In our guide to construction materials, we’ll talk a little bit about some of the many kinds of materials and their strengths and weaknesses. Even though it seems simple, choosing the right building materials for your project can decide how well it works out in the end.

Concrete and Steel Construction Materials

Concrete is probably the most common material in the construction industry, which is why it’s the first topic in our guide to construction materials. But let’s first talk about what exactly concrete is. Concrete is made up of three materials: water, aggregates, and cement. Though people often use the words interchangeably, cement is actually just one component of concrete. Essentially, water turns cement into a paste that coats the aggregates, which are usually made up of rock and sand. Concrete is a great building material to use for many reasons. It’s cheap to produce, which makes it a popular choice, and it’s also resistant to water and fire. In fact, concrete is more resistant to fire than wood and even steel. One disadvantage of building with concrete, though, is that it has a lower toughness. The toughness of concrete is roughly 1% to 2% that of steel.

Steel has become an increasingly important building material for a variety of reasons. In fact, we’ve talked a lot on our blog about the advantages of custom steel buildings. (Check out this blog post about reasons why custom steel buildings are so popular, for example.) Steel buildings are easy to maintain, they can be reused and recycled, and they have incredible toughness. This makes them resilient to weather and other damage, and this means that building owners don’t have to worry so much about maintenance. Though concrete can be cast into a particular shape, even concrete is more limited than steel. You can design steel buildings into shapes and layouts that no other building materials can handle. Unfortunately, though, steel isn’t quite as resistant to fire as concrete is, which means that it may require fireproof treatment. Still, it holds up to high temperatures better than other materials like wood.

Our Guide to Wood and Brick

Wood is one of the oldest building materials, and our guide to construction materials would be incomplete without talking about it. One of the best properties of wood is its light weight; unlike steel or concrete, wood is a relatively lightweight material. Because of this, though, wood isn’t often used for things like basement walls or foundations. It’s light weight simply doesn’t hold up. Still, wood is a great insulator against the cold, which makes it an incredible building material for residential structures. It’s also easy to cut, which makes it a useful and versatile building material in the construction industry, and people often prefer the look of homes built with wood. But wood has some other problems. Unlike concrete or steel, you sometimes have to deal with things like termites. And because it can’t be recycled, it’s not as environmentally friendly as other options like steel.

One of the biggest advantages that brick has as a building material is the way that it looks. In fact, many people choose to buy brick homes simply because they like the way that they look. Still, it’s becoming less and less common to see newly constructed brick homes. Though it was a popular building material for a long time, its popularity has steadily decreased. In 1970, people built 421,000 new brick houses, though they only built 113,000 new brick houses in 2010. There are several reasons for this recent decline. One of the problems with brick is its inability to handle temperature changes. Unlike other building materials like wood or steel, brick can crack when the weather changes, especially over long periods of time. Additionally, brick homes cost more. Because it involves laying each brick by hand, you have to pay for more labor when building brick houses.

Construction Materials of the Future

Recently, there have been some new building materials in the construction industry. More and more often, construction companies have been using recycled materials as construction materials. Some construction companies have started working on and using materials like self-healing concrete, which uses living spores in the cement that make it able to repair cracks in the concrete. Additionally, others have found ways to turn trash (like cigarette butts) into bricks that can be used as building materials. Though most of these new building materials aren’t widely used yet, you might see them more and more often as they become easier to produce. If you’re interested in learning more about the different kinds of construction materials, we recommend checking out this article here.

At Western Constructors, we work with you to make sure that you have the right building material for your project, whether you’re building a home for the first time here in Grand Junction or tackling your hundredth commercial project. We write posts like these to give you the information you need to make informed decisions about your current or future projects. And if our guide to construction materials helps you make a decision about which building material works best for your project, then our blog has done its job. Though it’s one of the first steps in the construction process, choosing the right building material is incredibly important. That’s why it’s important for us to educate you about it. We have years of experience and insight into the construction industry, and we hope that our blog can share a little bit of that insight with you.

Reasons to Hire a General Contractor in Grand Junction

In the past, we’ve talked about things like what you should look for when you hire a general contractor (you can find a link to that article here). But while these things are incredibly important to talk about, we’re going to go in a different direction. Today, we’re going to talk about why you should hire a general contractor instead. Knowing why to hire a general contractor is just as important as knowing how to find the right one. It’s our hope that this article—like our other blog posts—will make our industry a little clearer for you and give you all the information you need to make the right decisions. If you learn just one new thing every time you visit, this blog will have done its job. So today, we’re going to talk about some reasons to hire a general contractor in Grand Junction.

General Contractors Have the Right Knowledge and Skills

Do you know what all of the building codes across Grand Junction are? What about which subcontractors to hire and which to avoid? Would you be able to look at a finished project and guarantee that it will pass inspections? The truth is that most people have no idea. This is one of the reasons that hiring a general contractor is so incredibly important. General contractors like us know the answers to these questions. Plus, they can help you make sure that your building is safe and ready for inspection. If you try to work it out on your own and your building fails inspection, it means that you’ll have to spend time and money redoing your project and pay extra reinspection fees. Hiring a general contractor can help you avoid this unfortunate circumstance.

General contractors also have the skills and the experience necessary to manage a construction project. Scheduling isn’t as easy as it might seem, especially when you have to manage a lot of different people. But general contractors have experience in scheduling and know how to finish projects in the least amount of time. They also have contacts within the industry, which means that they know which subcontractors to hire and how to handle the subcontracting process. Imagine having to take care of scheduling and hiring for thirty to forty subcontractors (which is not an unlikely number when building a house) on top of your already-busy life. General contractors have the knowledge, connections, and skills necessary to complete your project safely and efficiently.

General Contractors Can Save You Money

Speaking of efficiency, one of the best reasons to hire a general contractor in Grand Junction is because they can save you money. And because they get the job done right the first time, you don’t have to go back and fix things after your project is finished. This leads to even more savings for you. Plus, when the job’s done right, the value of your new home or business is the highest it can be. If you’re trying to finish a project on your own and you’re not sure what to do or you have to cut corners, it can affect the value of your property. In this way, you can see hiring a general contractor as an investment. If you ever decide to sell your property, you’ll be glad that you had a general contractor leading your project.

Your general contractor acts as your single point of contact throughout the construction process. That means no mix-ups, no disputes, and no having to manage several different schedules all at once. Because things like mix-ups, delays, and disputes can all take time to resolve, you can complete your project more efficiently by hiring a general contractor instead. And remember those connections we mentioned before? Because of these connections, general contractors can get the materials and labor needed for your project at a lower price. When subcontractors don’t know who you are, they’ll often charge higher rates than they’ll charge the general contractors they’ve worked with before. In fact, the best subcontractors might not even choose to work with you if they don’t know who you are. This alone can almost completely mitigate the management fee that you pay your general contractor.

Some More Reasons to Hire a General Contractor in Grand Junction

Of course, there are other reasons to hire a general contractor as well. Unfortunately, construction can be a dangerous business. And if you don’t know what you’re doing, it can get you into trouble. General contractors have liability insurance and worker’s compensation policies so that you don’t have to worry about what happens if someone gets hurt on the job. Most people don’t have insurance that can completely cover the accidents or injuries that sometimes take place during the construction process. And even if it’s not an injury or an accident, something is bound to go wrong in every construction project. It’s better to have an experienced general contractor who knows what they’re doing than to try to take on those problems by yourself. If you’re interested in learning some more reasons to hire general contractors, be sure to check out this article here.

At Western Constructors, we have years of general contracting experience. Whether you’ve designed a new home or you’re looking to build a custom metal building, we can help. We’re confident that we can tackle any project that you can send our way. We’ve played a big role in Grand Junction, putting up new commercial buildings in the Las Colonias business park and new homes in the Redlands Mesa area. And that’s not the only thing we’ve done to improve our city. We’ve also helped shape the future of Grand Junction’s downtown. (You can read more about how we’ve shaped the future of downtown here if you’re interested.) We’re proud of the work we’ve done, and we can’t wait to keep making Grand Junction a better place. So if you need more reasons to hire a general contractor in Grand Junction, just give us a call.

Trends for Construction Companies Near Me – Here in CO

In the past, we’ve talked a little bit about trends to look out for in construction companies in 2019. (Be sure to check out that blog post here.) In that post, we talked a lot about what the future of the construction industry will look like. But most of the trends we were looking at were trends for the construction industry as a whole. That’s why this week we wanted to narrow our focus a little bit. Instead of talking about overall construction trends across the US, we’re going to talk about Colorado. We think that it’s important to take a look back every once in a while. We’ve found that when people search “trends for construction companies near me – here in CO,” they often don’t find the results that they’re looking for. That’s why we’re here; it’s our goal to give you the information you need to stay informed about our industry.

Trends for Colorado’s Population Growth

One of the most important things about Colorado right now is that the population is rapidly increasing. In 2016 alone, Colorado had 90,000 new residents, which made it the 7th fastest growing state in the US. And that number hasn’t slowed down. But you might ask, “What does this population growth mean for trends for construction companies near me?” As people continue to move into Colorado, it means that construction becomes more and more necessary. New people are starting new businesses across the state and needing to build new homes, which is why Colorado has seen a boom in construction lately. It seems that you only have to drive a few miles before you see construction equipment at one location or another. Now is an exciting time for construction companies in Colorado because of all the new businesses coming in. And as Colorado grows, this trend will continue.

But why is Colorado’s population growing so fast? There are a lot of factors that go into Colorado’s recent growth. One of the reasons might be that the Colorado job market has been consistently improving over the last 20 years. In fact, the Denver Business Journal ranked Colorado as the #1 state for job opportunities and the #2 most attractive state for employment. It might also have to do with the abundant recreational opportunities across the state (and especially in Grand Junction). And in addition to the job market, the economy in Colorado has been steadily improving, too. As Grand Junction and the rest of the state continue to grow, we have no doubt that we’ll continue to see new businesses open up in the city and new faces around town. And as they come in, it’ll keep all the construction companies in Grand Junction on their toes.

Increased Demand and Energy Efficiency for Construction Companies Near Me – Here in CO

Unfortunately, though, increased demand doesn’t always work out the way you’d expect. Though it would be nice if every new person was able to build their dream home in Colorado, there simply aren’t enough people working in the construction industry to make this possible. In fact, there has recently been a labor shortage. There is so much work for construction companies that they often can’t hire enough people to keep up with the demand. Some companies have tried turning to prefabricated project delivery, which is used to create custom steel buildings, as a solution. But it’s not clear yet whether that will be able to solve the labor shortage problem. Due to the high volume of work, construction companies have struggled to hire enough people. This is true not just in Colorado but across the US. Right now, there are about 250,000 unfilled construction jobs across the country.

Like many other states, Colorado has recently been investing a lot into energy efficient construction. This is important if you’ve ever wondered “what are the current energy efficiency trends for construction companies near me – here in CO?” The answer is that most Colorado construction companies are trying to use new construction equipment and methods that make their projects and project delivery more energy efficient. Doing so can have many positive effects. Minimizing costs through energy efficiency isn’t just a way for construction companies to save money. It’s also a way that Colorado construction companies are able to help their local communities. By building energy efficient products using energy efficient delivery methods, construction companies can help improve the environment around them. Many companies are investing more in sustainable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal power. In the long run, this can reduce waste and make the construction process more environmentally friendly.

Trends for Prefabricated Buildings

As we mentioned above, prefabricated buildings have been surging in the construction industry. It’s likely that they’ll continue to do so in the future. We’ve talked a little bit about the benefits of custom metal buildings for the industry, but we’ll talk a little more about them here. Because the projects are constructed offsite, it means that the companies that prefabricate the buildings don’t have to worry about many delays. They can work at their own pace without having to worry so much about scheduling issues, which makes it a popular option for construction companies. Getting your project done fast is always a priority in Grand Junction, all over Colorado, and abroad. If you’re interested in learning more about trends for construction companies in Colorado, be sure to check out this article here.

At Western Constructors, we’ve designed our blog to educate our readers. It’s our goal to share the knowledge we’ve gained in our years of experience in the construction industry. We know that the more that our readers know, the more informed decisions they can make. As always, it’s our mission to make sure that you learn something knew every time you visit our blog. Whether it’s through teaching you about the benefits of custom metal buildings (which you can read about here) or through letting you know how to hire the right commercial contractor (which you can read about here), we hope that our blog is a resource you can use to guide your way through the construction industry. We know that construction is sometimes a tough industry to understand. Still, we hope to make it a little easier to understand for every single one of our readers.

Things to Avoid When Buying a Custom Metal Building

In the past, we’ve talked about the benefits of buying custom metal buildings and how to take care of them. (You can find our articles about these topics here and here.) But as much as we love talking about the great things that custom metal buildings can do for you, we also feel that it’s important to prepare you the best we can. That’s why in today’s article, we’re going to talk about some things to avoid when buying a custom metal building. It’s our goal to make sure that the construction process is as easy as possible for you. We want to save you all the headaches we can; that’s why it’s important for us to inform you. Warning you about some common mistakes people make when buying custom metal buildings is a way that we can help you be better prepared.

Communication and Research When Buying a Custom Metal Building

One of the most common mistakes people make when buying a custom metal building is not doing their homework. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to just put up a building anywhere you want. There are state building codes that you need to meet, and some of them refer specifically to custom metal buildings. Of course, we can help you with this process, especially if we’re involved from the beginning of the design phase. But it’s important to make sure your ideas won’t fall through because of building codes you forgot to read. Talk with your contractor about applicable building codes to make sure that everything will go as smoothly as possible. You should always feel comfortable asking your contractor any questions you might have about your project, whether it’s a custom metal building or not.

One of the other things to avoid when buying a custom metal building also has to do with good communication with your contractor. A lot of people run into problems because they’re either not specific enough about their desires or they don’t give the contractor all the information they need. You should ask yourself some important questions before you start looking to build a custom metal building. You might ask yourself, “How much space do I need, exactly?” This is an important question, as people often end up underestimating the amount of space that they actually need. You should also ask yourself whether you plan to expand your building in the future, as this can impact your project’s design. It’s important to talk about all these factors with your contractor so that you’re both on the same page. Ending up with an imperfect project is the last thing you want.

Avoiding Bad Budgeting and Multiple Companies

Failing to properly budget for your custom metal building is another mistake you should avoid. Though custom metal buildings are an incredible investment and they can often get completed far sooner than traditional projects, you have to consider all of the costs in your budget. Again, this is something that we can help with, especially in the early stages of your project planning. But if you already have a building in mind and a budget prepared, you might want to double-check it. There are a lot of costs that people sometimes forget to factor in when planning a budget. Some of these costs include excavation fees, taxes, transportation costs, land survey fees, and more. Failing to account for these in your budget can make your project more expensive than you initially expected, so it’s important to consider all the potential costs involved.

Another common mistake people often make when buying custom metal buildings is not hiring the same contractor to do the entire job. It just makes sense to have one company start and finish the job for you. When you start bringing in multiple companies, disputes occur, there is a less cooperative atmosphere, and mistakes happen more frequently. It’s like the design-build project delivery we use at Western Constructors; having one team work together to get your project done makes sure that it is completed as fast as possible. It also leaves no room for disputes, arguments, or litigation. So if you’ve been considering hiring one company to construct your custom metal building and another to install it, you might want to reconsider your plan. When too many people get involved, it can often complicate the process and make it a whole lot messier.

Things to Consider: Reputation

People also often forget to consider the reputation of the company that will build their custom metal buildings. In the construction industry, reputation is of huge importance. If a company has bad reviews and you’ve heard people saying bad things about them, odds are that they’re going to do a bad job. It’s true the other way around, too. Take a look at the company you’re planning to buy from to ensure that they have a good reputation. If they don’t, it might be a good idea to start looking elsewhere. We’ve talked before about how important reputation is in finding a good contractor, and it’s true here, too. If you’re interested in learning more about things to avoid when buying a custom metal building, be sure to check out this article here.

At Western Constructors, we’re proud of the custom metal buildings we’ve helped put together in Grand Junction. It always makes us happy to see how relieved our clients are with the reduced maintenance and utility costs that come with custom metal buildings. We felt it was important to talk about some things to avoid when buying a custom metal building because we want you to be prepared. The more you know about the industry before you purchase a building, the better. Whether you’re looking for a new barn, garage, or office, custom metal buildings can be an amazing solution. But even so, you should always be careful when choosing to buy one. We wanted to teach you what we know so that you can make informed decisions. Hopefully, this new information will help guide you through the buying process to make it go smoothly for everyone.
